device not eligible for download

In trying to upgrade my Iphone from 4.3.3 to the latest 5.1, I got the message " device not eligible for download..." I took it to the genius bar, but they said they would have to wipe it clean before they could update it to the latest version. I have it backep up on my iMac, but can I do this at home using iTunes and my iMac?
