The curse of the spinning rainbow wheel :S

Hello all,
over the last few weeks now i have been having a certain problem which i'm not sure about...

basically when i start my computer everything starts well, the desktop loads and everything however i noticed awhile back that the time at the top right hand corner freezes and whenever i pass the mouse over it i see the spinning wheel... if this were the only thing i would say okay and leave it be but anytime this occurs ... i have alot of difficulty burning cds... from the moment i place the blank disk in a get a message that says:
"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with disk inserted, click Ignore. " :S Some Plz Help!!!

due to the nature of my work it is of utmost importance that i be able to burn cds at any convinence... so does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to solve this?

much thanks,,,

G5, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

on closely watching the computer start-up this morning, i realized what the problem might be.... the clock works fine until the program "Extensis Suitcase" (my font suitcase) opens after that everything goes wrong... the clock sticks... the program itself sticks (i would have to end up force quiting it, and even when i do that the clock still remains frozen with the wheel spinning)... so i guess its like a chain re-action this has only just recently been happening... so again i'm sending out a S.O.S on anyone that can help me....
