Need some help with iMovie. Converted a number of .avi files on my PC to mp4 format suitable for iPad3. When I open iMovie it says that I have no videos but if I go to Videos app I have heaps of video/movies/podcasts. Location services are turned on already so not that. Videos aren't appearing in camera roll or iPhoto either. Any advice to get these clips in so that I can create a movie would be much appreciated.

Try connecting to iTunes. Maybe the videos will appear in iPhoto? Or you can go to iTunes>Apps> iMovie and you can import it to our own iMovie and edit there.
i imported the movies from iTunes originally. They're short clips taken on a Sony point and shoot camera and then file converted so that I can view on iPad. As I said, the movies are playing and are saved on my iPad but I can't get them to display or import into iMovies.
Are they in your camera roll or did you try looking in your camera sd card?
The .avi files were on my home laptop (windows). I transferred them there from my cameras SD card. I then converted the .avi files on my laptop to mp4 files suitable for iPad and dragged and dropped them into the movies section of my iTunes - again on my laptop. I then connected my iPad and synched to my iTunes. The movie files copied accross in the synch and are now visible and can be viewed in my Videos app but when I open iMovies I can't view them or import them to create movies.
Yes, you cannot import Videos on your iPad. They have to be from your photos in your camera roll. You need to go back to your laptop and import them through your photo folder then sync into iTunes but click photos and sync the folder you made.
iMovie iOS was designed to edit video shot on the iOS device, so it cannot edit videos in the movies / videos app.
You need to import the video to the photos app.
Do this via the photos tab in iTunes, once you open the iPad.
MAke sure to tick the import videos button.
OR via the camera connection kit.
There are many explanations of this in this forum, do a quick search and you will see detailed descriptions.
Nowhere on the App store description does it say iPad iMovie can only edit footage taken on the device's own camera.
I have put in for a refund because that is blatant mis-selling.
