Q: How do I set up/use file sharing of documents on a home network?

I have 2 desktop iMacs and want to share files between them. I've placed the file in the Public>Drop Box on our upstairs computer. I have set the permissions upstairs. I've put the computer to sleep.

I then went downstairs to retrieve and work on the file where I have file sharing within system preferences checked. I go to Public>Drop Box and the file doesn't appear.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks much,

Ginger

    Thanks for trying....it won't work.....

I've tried all of that......I must be missing a small step, but I don't know where.

I have FS set up on both computers. I've gone:

System Preferences>Sharing>File Sharing>Choosing a shared Public folder (which is what I want)

Clicked:  Options: Clicked "Share files and folders using AFP":  Clicked "On _______ account":  Clicked "Done"

I've done the above steps on the shared computer too.

I've placed a document inside the shared folder on the main desktop computer and it will not appear on the other desktop.

    help please.........

The contents of the Drop Box folder are visible only to its owner. Put the files at the top level of the Public folder.

There is only 1 file in the drop box and it is the one I placed in it this morning.

I realize there is any easy fix, but I just can't figure out what tiny step I've missed.

    Thanks,

    Ginger

It isn't even a file that is inside the drop box it is an Excel document. I figured I'd start with one item and add from there. I was trying to make it easy--ha--

    Thanks again,

I guess I wasn't clear. First, an Excel document is a file. Second, you have to move it out of the Drop Box folder and into the top level of the Public folder.

I just got it. The problem I was creating was putting the upstairs/main computer to sleep. When I did that I couldn't see it downstairs and couldn't get to the drop box on the main computer....daaaa.

So, what I need to do is have all my docs in the drop box, leave the  main computer awake, go downstairs and drag my docs out onto the desktop to work on them.

To return them to that dropbox I'd have to wake up the upstairs computer and start over again downstairs.

Hence-I need my track shoes on to run the stairs!

Thanks so much for your help!
