backup taking too long??

HI GUYS,


I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A SEAGATE 3TB EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE , AS I HAVE 800GB TO BACKUP ON MY IMAC OS, AND MY 500GB TIME MACHINE IS NOT BIG ENOUGH, BUT I STARTED IT AT 9AM SUNDAY MORNING, IT IS NOW 7;45PM MONDAY NIGHT AND HAS ONLY BACKUP UP 203GB..? IS THIS NORMAL?? AT THIS RATE ITS GOING TO TAKE 7 DAYS TO BACK UP 800GB.... PLEASE ADVISE??

Sounds like you have the hard drive on a bus that has USB 1.1 devices on it, or too many hard drives trying to access the data at the same time. Go to Apple menu -> About this Mac -> More info or System Information. Make sure the external hard drive is the only device on the peripheral port bus in question. If it isn't it could slow down.

Firewire may come in one or both of the formats shown in the image below:

The two ports labelled just Firewire are 6 pin Firewire 400, also known as IEEE 1394a. The 4 pin Firewire found on some camcorders and some Sony computers has no power given to external devices.


The Firewire 800 is IEEE 1394b. Notice the inside of the Firewire 400 has a notch on one side, with a square end on the other.

Firewire 800 has a U shaped internal connector in the rectangular port.
