I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A SEAGATE 3TB EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE , AS I HAVE 800GB TO BACKUP ON MY IMAC OS, AND MY 500GB TIME MACHINE IS NOT BIG ENOUGH, BUT I STARTED IT AT 9AM SUNDAY MORNING, IT IS NOW 7;45PM MONDAY NIGHT AND HAS ONLY BACKUP UP 203GB..? IS THIS NORMAL?? AT THIS RATE ITS GOING TO TAKE 7 DAYS TO BACK UP 800GB.... PLEASE ADVISE??

Sounds like you have the hard drive on a bus that has USB 1.1 devices on it, or too many hard drives trying to access the data at the same time. Go to Apple menu -> About this Mac -> More info or System Information. Make sure the external hard drive is the only device on the peripheral port bus in question. If it isn't it could slow down.
I might add, please avoid from using ALL UPPERCASE. Internet users with a lot of experience know this means you are shouting or attempting to be rude. If that's not your intent, avoid from doing it, as it is also hard to read.
im not sure what you mean by bus port? do you mean Airport?
I have the external hard drive connected to the time machine, i just need to know if 7days is normal to backup 800gb of data using this configuration
Brody means is your backup drive connected by USB cable to a USB slot (called a port) on the back of your computer?
Or is connected by something called a FireWire port using a FireWire style cable?
What year, make and model is you Mac?
We need to know this to figure out if your issue is normal or not.
Is your new Harddrive "Connected" to your computer (USB or Firewire800) or are you using a WiFi conncetion to access it?

you are right, there is nothing connected to the computer, so that means its doing a wireless backup,
so 7 days is about right then?

I think you should be able to connect your TimeMachine to your iMac directly via USB or better yet Firewire 800. That should bring your time down to a few hours. The first backup is quite q lengthy process then only modified files are saved to the backup.
sorry but what is fire wire exactly?
It is a communication port on the rear of your iMac. It works much faster than USB and some drives are set up for USB and Firewire.
Firewire may come in one or both of the formats shown in the image below:
The two ports labelled just Firewire are 6 pin Firewire 400, also known as IEEE 1394a. The 4 pin Firewire found on some camcorders and some Sony computers has no power given to external devices.
The Firewire 800 is IEEE 1394b. Notice the inside of the Firewire 400 has a notch on one side, with a square end on the other.
Firewire 800 has a U shaped internal connector in the rectangular port.
