Apple had two releases today (10.7.5 and 10.8.2) which, amongst other things, had the following:
"Resolves a video issue with some VGA projectors when connected to certain Mac notebooks"

We did some preliminary testing 'round here and this seems to have fixed some things.
Reading all the posts on this topic, and disparing after yet another shocking experience of having to borrow laptops. I switched to mac book pro for the implicit use of software and ability to present. After two months and many reboots upgrades and following of prompts, I am taking the computer back to the shop. I find it absolutely crazy that you cannot use a simple plug in device and deliver presentations. So much for the great apple experience. I for one have not had any...
Every time I try to plug in, it's a spinning wheel, or blue screen that then results in a reboot. I am so blooming annoyed with this topic and apple.
Yes 10.8.2 seems to have fixed the problem for me. I tried my 2012 13" MBA on a few -- vintage -- VGA projectors and was able to connect in each case. Still a bit nervous about traveling with my new MBA though...
Frankly, this took WAY to long to fix. Does anyone really think crap like this would have festered for months with Steve at the helm? (Sigh).
I have the same freakin problem.
I spent some hard earned cash to upgrade my 2008 MacBook Pro that's been doing we some for me for VIDEO Djing to this **** product that has caused me many problems.
The VGA connection is a huge part oft work that I cannot do properly now thanks to this new MacBook Pro.
Please apple can you give us a life line here.
It was ok before when all I had to do was restart the MacBook. Since the update I have to restart it and wait for the apple logo to come on then insert the apple connector with VGA
Now if you can imagine doing this every time before a gig with a full club and of party goers it's soon **** stressful.
And having the other DJ wondering why I'm turning my laptop on and off
FIX THIS NOW!! I've waited patiently since the release of thisacbook I bought it day it was released this year and I'm exhausted now y'all are mucking around.
TOO LONG NOW!!
I have just found a solution with the help of a good apple supporter: boot your mac while holding shift....
when the monitor or beamer is connected. Then go to monitor (system preferences) and adjust your settings... then restart your computer.
(There is an issue after firmware upgrade with retina display macbook pros... just boot secure mode then every thing should be ok... I solved the problem this way...)
I just followed this thread and am having the similar issues with connecting my new 11"MBA to VGA projectors. I noticed nothing has been posted for a few weeks and wondering if Apple has provided any solutions?
I haven't seen the problems described lately and thought it might help to describe what happens when I try to connect.
Today I had a presentation in Keynote. I plugged into the projector and all that showed up was the Desktop picture (i.e. no tool bars, no desktop icons, just the Apple galaxy picture). I found that my presentation was actually sitting off the visible screen. So, I moved the pointer off to the left of the visible screen, found my presentation, "grabbed it", and dragged it to the visible part of the screen. Obviously a screen display / mirroring problem. Then, when I played the Keynote, it projected the Presenter notes, which indicated it was mirroring what was on my screen rather than showing the presentation as a slideshow. In the end, I just flipped through the slides in the Keynote program rather than playing the Keynote. It was sloppy, but I got through it...
BTW, when I connect via a document camera, the display is the right size and plays Keynotes as they should be played.
Anyone more ideas? Has Apple addressed this problem? Frankly, I got this MBA because there's enough to think about when giving presentations... let alone technical difficulties. Hoping there's a fix to this problem soon!
I had this problem a couple of weeks back even with the 10.8.2 OS update installed. I was about try the Restart option with the projector connected, when the 10.8.3 update came by. With this the problem seems to have disappeared / solved. I was able to connect and do the presentation on 2 projectors at two different sites.
With MS Powerpoint, I had no problem even in the Presenter's view - which showed up correctly in the laptop while the full sceen output on the projector.
I do hope this will continue with other models of LCD projectors as well.
