Password box flickers while entering a password

When I enter passwords into the little box that opens up, the box stays illuminated as being on top of the desktop for a short while. It then fades such that I need to press the touchpad in order to continue entering my password. It will do that several times during the course of entering a password, especially if it is a long password. I eventually get the password in and press enter and go to where I need to go but what is going on that entering a password is not a smooth simple step? Is there something competing or is there a setting issue. Please advise.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Dear Linc,

This happens only in the little box, not the whole display and nearly everytime that I need to logon to something with a password. As I said I get the password in eventually but I need to keep hitting the touchpad to make the little box active so I can continue to enter the password. It is just a bother but what makes the box go in and out of being active/not active all by itself?

Hello Ella, hello Linc;

I wonder- do you hit the track pad with parts of your hands while you type, and the track pad settings are set to really sensitive?

If yur wrist drags the cursor over a different field and you accidentally click, that will shift the focus away from the password box...

Check that out, AFTER doing what Mr D says...

(why I thought of this: I was getting zoom ins on pages, sometimes back out...and I took a real hard look at the track pad settings and in the years since I got my first machine (2003 - 2012 RIP) many new things added to track pad abilities... and my posture in certain postiions with the laptop was making my wrists do things I had no idea were coming...)
