For some reason, iClound intermittently deletes or loses a small number of contacts. It is difficult to explain, but it is always the same cards or one of a small number of cards. I go to call someone and the card is gone (from all devices). I either have to re-enter the data or go searching for it in a backup file. I wanted to know where the data were so that I could back into Time Machine in order not to have to keep asking people for their address

I haven't had a problem with iCloud deleting contacts. Possibly one of the databases might be corrupt. See that the contacts are at the website. Mabe try signing out of iCloud completely on both devices and delete the contacts from them. Check and fix the contacts at the website, then sign back into iCloud and check contacts. This will restore them to the devices and rebuild the database files on them.

Before doing anything, export the contacts from AB so you will have quick access to reimport them.

In addition:

iCloud stores the AB data in the Sources folder within the AddressBook folder instead of the main AB folder. That file for iCloud AB is removed and restored each time you sign in and out of iCloud. It is only on the computer when signed in.
