Q: The lower half of the display on my Powerbook either displays completely black or varying shades of gray

The lower half of the display on my Powerbook either displays completely black or varying shades of gray. The mouse appears frozen in that area but still functions in the upper half of the screen. is this a logic board issue or the inverter board or something else?

PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

An external monitor is a great diagnostic tool. If the Image on an external has artifacts like those seen on the internal display, the problem i s likely with the video hardware on the logic board and, given the scarcity and cost of know-good PB boards today, probably not worth fixing.

On the other hand, a "normal appearance on the external limits the fault to less expensive components like the video cabling, the inverter or the display itself.

Another simple diagnostic is to move the display and see if the image changes during the move. If it cahnges when you move the display, that points to the video cabling that runs though the hinge areas.
