Q: Installed additional memory, but all I get is beeping. Bad memory? Wrong module?

I added a gb of RAM to my 2007 iMac, but all I got was beeping. Is this a bad module? Wrong module? All went back to normal when I removed it.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Could be a bad module, could be the wrong type of module, could be a defective slot. Your model uses two - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs. You may install up to 6 GBs although Apple only certifies 4 GBs. 6 GBs may not always work.

I have the right module, but the seller thinks it might be defective and is willing to replace it. I'll try that. I have been reading that the Macs are fussy about the quality of the RAM it accepts. Mine was fairly cheap (though not the cheapest) , so maybe that's an issue. I'll see what happens when I get the new one. Thanks for the quick reply.

Cheap RAM is really not an issue. The vendor is more important than the price of the RAM or the brand, but be sure to get RAM that carries a manufacturer's lifetime warranty. This usually is not the least expensive RAM.
