SSD cache

Hi,

I have intalled and formated a SSD as my 2nd HDD for my May2011 iMac. How do I enable the SSD caching? I have found the pre-installed RAID app, but it will not reconize my SSD (even though the iOS shows both of it's partitions as free space).

Can anyone help or send me a link to how this is set up on a mac? I have found a ton of Windows tutorials on SRT or SSD caching but not a one for Apple.

Thanks

JW

OK, I guess I'm not getting what you want to do. The beauty of the SSD is the speed of data retrieval as like launching Apps, Starting System, etc. The system uses some disk caching for normal operations as do Applications. Most of the heavy lifting is done by RAM which is what it was designed for. Hyperthreading is an operation that occurs while an Application manipulates data in files and it uses RAM for caching. How big is your SSD? In this article they seem to be talking about using a small SSD in leiu of more RAM.

I personally would make the SSD my boot drive and load Applications on it. Use the HD for storage of files not currently in use and keep enough freespace for the Applications to manipulate the data on the SSD then move the finished projects to the HD. Most Applications will automatically use the current drive as the cache.

I understand this. Here is some info. on SRT and SSD cacheing. It basically creates up to 64GB of cache space for your running applications and allows the data to be mirrored to the spinning hard drive.

So the SSD acts as 64GB of RAM sort of.

To anyone out there asking this question:

I talked to a master tech at apple for a long time... Long story-short Apple doesn't have a natie program to support SSD caching and they are not intending to. Instead they are working on using the Thunderbolt technology to wire directly into SSDs.

HOWEVER!

The hardware will suport SSD catching, but it will have to be made by a 3rd party deveolper.

I did a little digging and found these guys out there beta testing the code for it. (I signed up to be a beta tester but no reply yet..)
