Mac Intel Safari displays as Netscape 7.2 Windows XP

Hello - I use a free web site traffic counter from statcounter.com and recently noticed that someone was visiting my businessweb site repeatedly from a local city using Netscape 7.2 on Windows XP. I was excited because I thought it was a potential customer. However, I got suspicious when the activity continued over the weekend and appeared to be around the same time I was uploading new content to the web site. So I did a test upload and went back in to the statcounter.com page and sure enough it was the same Netscape 7.2 on Windows XP.

I recently got a Macbook Pro and this activity all started at the same time. Why would my activity show up as Windows XP? Also, I seem to remember a while ago that there was an option in Safari to change the way that your browser "announces" itself to web sites - is this what is happening here?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brian

I think it may be more to do with the way that the webcounter detects the browser/OS - likely it doesn't recognise your properly & though bad coding or a default option... it displays what you saw.

Unless you've used safari's 'debug' menu or some safari/system enhancing app/hack ??? - nothing to be concerned about.

thought most page counters didn't include visits from the site admin - usually via a cookie .
