hey limnos

first things first - i like your cat! looks v purry and has the same bright circles around her eyes like mine had!!

does she have tufties?

to your links - thanks very much -

1) i only need a 1.5x version, not 1.6, and the internet stick accepts the current java on THIS very Mac I am browsing with

2) done and installed with no effect, hmmm...

3) dont want /need to update to 10.4.11 it may effect use of programs made for 10.4.lower and i can use the stick on this one with 10.4.8

4) okay the current 10.4.8 powerbook I am on is on java 1.5.0_07 and the upstairs 10.4.8 powerbook... I cannot connect to the net due to the internet stick needing JRE 1.5 to find out :-( but hey, i am not a stupid girl. saved the html page above on my memo stick and opened in firefox upstairs and it says "Java 1.4.2_07" - good to know!!!

downloaded the links as above, with the result, release 5 being the first of the last 4 releases (5-9) and my mac says "please install previous relases first with the updater!" grrrr....

now I have disk images of all releases from 4-9, but they dont help. my mac is asking to download from the update menu. canot do as i cannot connect. is there any way around this??? help please!!

I have not installed Java updates in years so I would have to work my way into the details of it again. See BDAqua's comments in one of the links about some components possibly being installed by other updaters. If you are running an earlier system version then it is possible these were not installed. I just don't know.

Another thing I do not know about in detail are security issues. I know that Java (vs. javascript) was not updated against recent malware for pre-OS 10.6 by Apple. There as some inconclusive discussion as to whether or not this mattered with PPC Macs, but I do see one of yours is Intel where it may matter.

Sorry I cannot be of more assistance.

yes i have 3 ppcs, 2 of which powerbooks. originally for work, but currently i am on maternity break. trying to re-activate and update, clean up, archive etc to get ready going back to work. the 4th was the first intel and problems with adobe pack which was built for ppc. the intel one is ready to go to someone else now. but the other three can remain 10.4.8 only with the problem that only the one i am connected to the net is java 1.5...

what i can try is connect the other two to someone's ethernet (only have a mobile internet stick, not broadband) and do the update whilst being connected. surely that would work. i could then make a new disk image so the problem wont bother me again. it's the only solution i can think of.

hopefully i can get a few more years out of these macs. the only point where those machines start struggling is - internet and browsers and plugins develop faster than applications/versions suitable for os 10.4.8, e.g the latest firefox is possibly not suitable for os 10.4.8 - i'll have to check....

cross fingers

thanks for your tips etc anyway :-)
