Why is my startup disk on my new iMac completely full (1TB)?

I'm new to Apple Computers and recently purchased an iMac about a month ago. I started getting a message popping up saying that my startup disk is full. When I looked in the Disk Utility under Macintosh HD, it said that my entire 1 TB was used??? How can this be?? Most everything I have is on my external hard drive. I only have a few pictures, movies and songs on my computer. What's the deal?

Mac OS X dynamically assigns memory space. As such if you open many applications, space can get filled up quickly. But the error could be erroneous because of some applications which aren't compatible. See my FAQ* on what may be filling your machine:

Have a look at how space is being used:

This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed."
