The below is what I'm trying to do but nothing happens:

Adding content on your computer to iTunes

iTunes helps you add digital audio and video files on your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats. You can also add video content in QuickTime or MPEG-4 format to iTunes. To learn how to add these files to iTunes follow the steps below.

  1. Open iTunes
  2. From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    • Mac

      Add to Library

    • Windows
      • Add File to Library
      • Add Folder to Library
  3. Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add

If iTunes is set to "Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library," iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes Preferences.

But at which point does "nothing happen" - opening iTunes, selecting File, navigating, - who knows?

Assuming that you have a Windows machine (since you've posted in the iTunes for Windows section), I'll go out on a limb and assume that you have selected the folder you wish to add and clicked on Select Folder and it's at this point that "nothing happens".

So then the question is; is there anything in the folder that can be added to iTunes, and if so, what - music, video, PDFs?

If I have this wrong, then you need to tell us exactly which step fails, not simply list the ones you want to take.

A permissions issue perhaps?

Right-click on your main iTunes folder, or in this case the folder you are trying to add, and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.

If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.
