message: very low battery

the ipod classic has been plugged into a power source for about 45 minutes but still has the message very low battery. The Apple icon comes on, then a clicking sound and the screen returns back to very low battery.

The ipod has not been used in over a year and seems like the battery won't take a charge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
