After editing a bit, I can't drag into timeline unless I quit and reopen

Why is it when I make a few edits, I selet something and FCPX won't let me drag it into the timeline unless I quit and re-open FCPX?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 16 GIG Ram
