My iMac G4 doesn't detect my bootable USB

Hi,

I have a 16 Gb USB stick with Xubuntu bootable on it. But when I tried to boot my old iMac G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 from that USB (by pressing the option key when the computer booted up) it did just show the main harddrive in the computer, nothing else.

Before I made it bootable I formated it and the format is now MS-DOS (FAT). And to make it bootable I wrote some commands in the terminal. The file on the USB is the Xubuntu installer .iso

Can some body help me to figure out why my iMac G4 don't find the USB. Does it have something to do with the format (MS-DOS (FAT)), or the system on the usb?

EDIT: I made the USB bootable on a MacBook running the latest version of Lion

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

PowerPC Macs generally can't boot from USB. The version of Linux also needs to be specifically designed for PowerPC Macs.
