Jul 18, 2012 8:26 AM in response to fmenchby dalstott,You have to convert AW 5 to AW 6 before Pages can open the docs.
This thread may help you to do something different.

Jul 18, 2012 8:31 AM in response to dalstottby fmench,The problem is that I open an AW 5 doc with AW 6, but then when I try to open that with Pagges, it reverts to its previous form. I think the problem is Lion. That url was from 2009 & the pre-Lion versons of OSX allowed a lot more. I'll go back again & try saving a AW5-AW6 doc & see if I can open the AW6 before doing anything with Pages.

Jul 18, 2012 8:58 AM in response to fmenchby fmench,No, I can't save the doc to Pages. The message is that the computer does not recognize any PPC applications.

Jul 18, 2012 8:59 AM in response to dalstottby fmench,It will not let me save them as AW 6. When I try that, it just blanks out again.

Jul 18, 2012 3:19 PM in response to MlchaelLAXby fmench,This sounds interesting, if a little complicated for me. I still have the Snow Leopard disc. Whether it might have Rosetta on it or not I don't know. But I don't know what Parallels 7 is in Lion. I'll try looking that up. Does this mean that Snow Leopard could be called up at need without interfering with the basic operation of Lion?

Jul 18, 2012 3:35 PM in response to fmenchby MlchaelLAX,Yes: Rosetta can be installed during the installation of Snow Leopard when selecting the Options button and checking Rosetta (it was automatically installed in Leopard and Intel Tiger).
Parallels is a virtualization program primarily used to operate Windows concurrently with the Mac OS (as opposed to BootCamp, which is a "dual-boot" solution, only allowing one operating system at a time) and costs $79 retail for new users (perhaps cheaper through online sources).
You need a "retail" Snow Leopard disc and not the one that is "machine-specific" that may have come with your MacBook Pro ($29, free shipping from the Apple Store).
Yes: You can launch Snow Leopard/Parallels at any time within Lion and it does not interfere with the other aspects of Lion.
If you find the installation a bit challenging, I am available through the MacRumors thread to help out!

Jul 18, 2012 5:24 PM in response to MlchaelLAXby fmench,This sounds promising. My Snow Leopard is in a box that says"Retail" on it, so all I should have to buy is Parallels. Question: the Apple Store guy was able to set me up so that all the AppleWorks 6 files automatically & globally shifted to open with Pages when I brought them up. Would this routine for AW5 work similatly (changing all AW5 files to open with Pages) or would I need to do it one file at a time?
I won't get to doing anything about this until next week, but I may get back to you after that once I have Parallels.
Many thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Jul 18, 2012 7:36 PM in response to fmenchby MlchaelLAX,I do not use Pages, but I found this resource page for you about iWorks, including a link for an AppleScript that claims to convert AppleWorks files to Pages:
http://www.beth.k12.pa.us/staff/pconnolly/pconnolly/iWork.html
"Download this applescript by Yvan Koenig, then place all Appleworks files in a folder and drag the folder on top of this script app. It creates a folder with all the converted documents:

The link to Abandoning Appleworks by Roger Wilmut (another great resource) is broken; here is the correct link:

Jul 18, 2012 7:49 PM in response to MlchaelLAXby fmench,This looks like a useful program, if it goes back to AW5 & not just AW6. I will try it next week when we get back from a tournament.
Thanks.
