I have heard that security update 2012-002 can prevent legacy applications from opening in Snow Leopard. This may be a fix to the original update
which caused the problem.

You heard wrongly.
There was indeed an update that broke Rosetta. If I remember correctly, it prevented PPC apps from opening files and would crash them when you tried. Here's one thread on the subject.

It's long since been fixed.
Thanks for bringing that up. However, nothing similar has occurred with the 2012-002 security update.😉
