I've found a way around that, whew... (I could not have gone into every duplicate to delete, as I have hundreds of contacts!) But it would mean deleting the currently installed app, so you won't do this unless you can or have backed up all conversations to iCloud first:

- Delete the current app

- Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars ...and to every account you have there

- Switch off "Contacts" (or switch off the account itself if it's "Google" since that in itself is the Contacts link-up) on all but the one account you want to import from e.g. Gmail

- Ensure you have only one account that has Contacts switched on (e.g. if you had Gmail and Google switched on simultaneously you will still have duplicates though the login to the both may be the same).

- Re-install WhatsApp

... and wallah, only one set of contacts there 🙂

And you can go back to switching all the accounts you'd swtiched off and still find the one set of contacts showing in WhatsApp.

Note that when I did not delete WhatsApp and just switched off the accounts in Settings, the duplicates still showed up. So I think that it's at the time of setup that the syncing should be done only to the one set of contacts.

HTH..

I had this problem and after much faffing about I have solved it.

Go into your main contacts folder on the phone and click 'edit' one of the contacts that is appearing twice in the WhatsApp app.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and you should see an option in a red bar to delete 2 contacts. (I don't know why this shows as 2 contacts)

Don't delete them yet.

You will need to click on the minus ➖ sign to unlink these contacts, then click done.

Go back into the main contacts page and you will see 2 contacts now instead of one, delete one.

Go to the Whatsapp app and you will see that the duplicate has now gone.

If you have a lot of contacts this might take a little while, but this worked for me

I have this problem too. I first synced my contact with my PC using itunes. I later synced to a Microsoft Exchange email account. I seems that all my contacts were duplicated because of this. The built-in iphone contacts manager recognised them as duplicates and linked them. But it seems whatsapp does not recognise them as duplicates. So you can unlink and delete them one by one as suggested already or maybe you can delete them all in itunes, then resync the phone to the PC to delete the contacts that came from the PC.
