I have lost my discs that came with my iMac when I was moving, and now I have to reformat it because it crashed. Do I seriously have to pay that much for a new set of discs!!! Is there any other way around it???

Only if you want the pre-bundled software that came with the computer. Otherwise, you can buy the Snow Leopard DVD from Apple's Online Store - $29.00.

Yes, that would be all you would need repair your hard drive and permissions, reformat the hard drive, and to reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch.
However, the iLife apps that came originally would be lost because those are only available if you purchase replacement discs from AppleCare.
Of course if you had a bootable backup you could simply restore it to the computer.
I'm sure I can live without half the apps that came with it. The ones I used are pretty standard with app store. Thanks for the assistance
