What ram for iBook G3 Clamshell ?

Hi, I have my iBook G3 Clamshell. It is a 366 Mhz Graphite model without wirewire.

I replaced the HD with a 120GB and i upgraded ram (i added a 128MB) with now total of 192MB RAM.

I installed OS X 10.4.11 Tiger using XpostFacto but it still could do with more speed.

How much RAM can i max it out to ?

What type of RAM do i need to look for ?

Will maxing out the RAM make a difference in speed using Tiger ?

iBook, Mac OS X (10.3.x)

Hello,

Sounds like your iBook has a built-in 64 meg of memory. You can increase that to 320 meg by adding 256 meg of SDRAM PC133 14 pin module. Maxing the memory will speed things up a little, but just don't expect a massive amount of speed from it's 366 Mhz PowerPC processor.

I've tried and tested a 512 Meg card in my iBook Clamshell running Tiger, however it was the SE 466 Mhz model.

I don't know it would work in yours. If it does it would max the memory to 576 meg.

Hope this helps

Thats great news. I know it wont be super fast but jumping from 192MB to 576MB should make quite a big difference especially since i'm running Tiger which makes good use of the ram.

What spec of RAM should i look for ? PC133 SoDimm ?

Apple officially reports that the maximum memory capacity of this system is 320 MB with 64 MB of onboard memory. However, third-parties have been able to upgrade the RAM to 576 MB with a single 512 MB memory module.

I would go for the 512 MB memory module.

I knew there was some firmware hack, never looked into it in that much detail to be honest. I was not aware that PC133 would make a lot off different considering it's only the data rate maximized by 33hz. Which I believe the clamshells couldn't handle that well under OS 9, but are fine when the 2001 firmware update was applied for Mac OS X. Which probably explains why mine is happy to run 512 PC133 under OS X 10.4.11.
