I'm trying to create a way for the reader to name one of the main characters and have that name automatically appear throughout the duration of the book? Is there a widget or a way to do this?

I think if you need that level of interaction, you'd be better suited making an app instead.

I'm new to this, what do you mean by local storage and would it be easier to create a whole new app for this or just a widget to add onto something else?
How do you imagine a name would be used?
As a caption? Watermarked into a branded image? Woven into the story? Used once each time the book is opened? Spoken? Styled on demand?
Woven into the story - It would appear as normal text throughout the rest of the book. I would allow the reader to create the name in the first few pages and that name would appear sometimes as just the first name, sometimes just the last name, and other times both.
IDK if it would be easier, but I think it would be better to keep the one "hyperlink" or changeable name on the first page.
And, there would be a list of names that it couldn't be, since there are other characters in the book.
Thought so. ...those abilities are nowhere near the wheelhouse of any widget.
Again. make an app if those are your goals (and they are good ones) - tho more work of course, it is the ideal solution for your examples.

Download the FREE An iBuild Opportunity Part 1 and try out the widget Money Spin in the book. It stores user names, scores, puzzles, letters, etc. - it is a widget
Any widget can store local data (and usually does)
Sure, if all you want is info inside a widget.
It is not possible, otherwise, to use a widget to salt text content elsewhere in a book. That's what the OP wants, so a widget is a waste of time.
