My computer and Itunes won't recognize my ipod. Everything freezes so I can't take any measures to fix it!

So I plug my ipod into my computer. Windows explorer crashes. It doesn't show up in itunes or my computer. And I can't do any of the steps apple suggests to fix the problem because it freezes my computer. I don't even think it's my ipod i think its the computer. But what should I do to fix the problem?

As a test, shut down (power OFF) your computer. Disconnect all USB devices, including any hub device. Do this to Reset the iPod

Start up computer with all USB devices disconnected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if used). Run iTunes. Connect shuffle to a direct USB port on computer. See if it still causes the lockup.

If it's better, add your other USB devices back (one at a time) to see if the problem recurs. If it does recur, there may be a USB device conflict. Or, all of your devices connected together may be drawing too much power from the USB bus, causing the computer to "freeze." The iPod charges its battery from the USB port, so it is a high-power device.
