Q: HP 6500 printer not recognizing when a job in the print queue

My HP 6500 "All in One" printer is not recognizing when there's a print job in the queue.  It knows a the printer is connected and it will print if I turn the printer off, wait 20 seconds and turn it back on again.

Any help in troubleshooting this is greatly appreciated.  My Macbook Air is brand new, all s/w updates in place.
