See if you can put it into Disk Mode

If that works, connect it to your computer and run iTunes. If iTunes recognizes it, see if you can do a Restore, which is done from the iPod's Summary tab (in iTunes by selecting the iPod in the sidebar under DEVICES). This will erase the iPod, reinstall the latest software, and set it to default settings. If the cause was data corruption of some type on the hard drive, erasing it may fix the problem.
