Jul 18, 2012 5:28 PM in response to fmcgheeby Pinnacle Hiker,Did you check your network connections and do everything by the book in this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your PC is malfunctioning but its hard drive is still good, one can always migrate Mac compatible files manually as I did with my brother's PC laptop when it went dark.
The only tools you need are a compatible external SATA drive enclosure and a small phillips screwdriver. Laptops are standardized on 2.5" SATAs and big box PCs on 3.5 inch SATA drives. Just look around the back office for any external SATA backup or portable drive enclosure that seems the right size and has a firewire, USB etc. port that allows you to cable to and hookup with your new Mac.. Shutoff and pull the hard drive from the external backup/portable box, set it aside temporarily and replace with your internal hard drive from your PC ( be sure to discharge any static by touching metal on a grounded pc or device before pulling).
Don't have any backup drive enclosures? Your can get the universal one I have that works as easy as a popup toaster: Go to OWC mac sales at this link http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/voyager.
Connect your PC's hard drive to the Mac. Assuming the hard drive powers on smoothly and mounts when hooked up to the Mac, use Drive Genius or other disk repair utility to check out the hard drive to avoid moving anything corrupt over. If the files themselves have not been corrupted by the PC, all mac compatible files should now be mounted and visibile in the external external HD under devices in the finder. Drag and drop from your PC hardrive all documents, pictures folders etc. onto your new Mac document folders etc. to copy.
Common Mac-PC compatible files with the folowing . extensions are listed here at http://resources.marshalladulteducation.org/techtips/techtip16.htm. Generally the PC data file names should have the appropiate 3 letter extension but do a cursory check to see they do.
