iphone plugged into computer no sound

When I plug my iphone into my computer I don't get any sound from the iphone speaker. I do get sound if I plug in my headphones however. I've had my iphone for almost a year and I can't remember if this has always been the case. Is it normal or a bug? If normal, why?? I miss texts and calls because of it. If a bug, how do I fix?

Thanks!

Thanks. Actually I found out it's the cable. I recently got a spare cable (Griffin USB cable with iPhone adapter), which is what I've been using to plug into my computer. I realized that might be the reason, so I tried using the Apple cable instead and sure enough I got sound through the iPhone speaker. I think what is happening is when the Griffin cable is plugged in, the iPhone thinks it's connected to an audio output device so it redirects the sound to it. Now the question is can this be fixed or do I have to buy a new Apple cable? =(
