Q: 2012 11 inch MacBook Air has a yellow tinted screen

I have an 11 month old 13 inch MacBook Air, which I love.  Loved it so much I got an 11 inch for certain trips.  Long story short, got the 11 inch and sat it down next to my 13 inch to transfer over my data and the screen colors were shockingly different.  The 13 inch has a beautiful color display.. very cool.  The 11 inch has a warn yellowish look to it.  Opened photos and thats when you can see a big difference.  Looking at photos from my last trip to Italy, I could see so much more colors on the 13 inch than the 11 inch.  So I called Apple Care, and of course they took care of me...walked me through a few steps and then declared my MBA DOA and the replacement is on the way.  I should have it in a few days, and will post an update.

Got my replacement MBA...came with an LG screen (LP116WH4-TJA3) vs. the AUO (B116XW05 V6) screen on the yellow tinted model.  The difference is pretty outstanding.  The LG has a much more colorful screen.  Pictures pop, and whites are white, not yellow.  I can see up to 252 on the white saturation test.  I can only see up to 250 on the AUO for example http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php Not saying that AUO can't make a decent monitor, but from what I can see in these two examples, AUO failed.  I'm so relieved and grateful that Apple Care took care of me so well.

    Under the "Displays" preference pane, Color tab, you can calibrate the display, setting the White Point. This should alleviate any color disturbances or ill settings the unit has now.

     

    I'm surprised they weren't able to make it work.

    Hi, thanks for your suggestion.  I have been an IT pro for 20 years, been using a Mac non-stop since 2000.  Of course, I tried that and more... but appreciate your response

    Unforutuantley, this replacement was exciting when I first got it but I quickly realized that the screen was very washed out and it's screen is hard to look at for a while unless I keep it up at full brightness and then it's so washed out that I can't really enjoy it.  Back in Apple Care's hands again

    You can do a Google search on yhis issue and you will find that the colors need to be calibrated. You can even download a custom color profile for the display which makes it much more vibrant. This is a know issue with the LG displays and is easy to fix. Applecare won't be able to do anything.

    Thanks captain obvious.  I tried every diffrent calibration that was made for the 11 inch MBA with an LG screen already.  I even tried to make a few for myself.  The bottom line is that this LCD is bright, colorful, but not sharp and either dark, hard on the eyes, and washed out or bright and washed out depending on the light settings.  Actually, Apple Care can do a lot for me, and their senior techs took one look at my screen shots and now they have taken the case and are going to be examining why these MBAs are so different from each other.  And in the end, they are going to make sure that I have a MBA as it was designed by Apple in California, not mis-produced in Asia.  Apple does not want devices being shipped with so much variation.  Even my SSDs had different speeds!  And they were both from Samsung.  Pretty bad situation when I'm nervous to buy an Apple Computer and it's a lottery whether I will get a healthy one or not.  Thats not acceptable...and Apple Care agrees.

    I have similar issue, compared my MBA2012 to MBA2011 the display shows outstanding difference. I have a question: are you saying that calling Apple Care, they will handle it no matter you have purchase the Apple care protection plan or not?? does't the replacement cost you extra money? many thanks in advance

    I'm so fed up with this situation.  If you goto an Apple store, the MBAs on display have beautiful colorful made by Samsung, but the MBAs they ship have second rate displays made by LG and AOU.  These second rate displays are not sharp, no colorful, and have washed out colors.  I'm about to get my 3rd replacement.  I'm loosing my patience for Apple with all these QC issues.. Seems like this ship has gotten too big to steer straight.  I tried all those profiles, they don't help

    This article explains how to determine which display you have and has a link to the profile. It is for the 2011 MBA, but improves the color saturation on my 2012 MBA wih an LG display.

    Thank you Peter, I saw that site and the profile didn't help me.  I'm went to 2 different Apple stores and they both had 11 inch MBAs with excellent Samsung displays.  So why does Apple sell me a computer with a different display??  I took a series of side side photos.  Will be posting them to a new web site I'm creating.

    Because, General Nonsense, Apple does not allow users to pick and choose the components on their products.  You loved your first computer - with an AOU display, and then noticed differences between your computer and another computer, and you demanded a computer with an LG display.  Apple provided you with a computer with an LG display.  After a few days, you noticed differences between your computer, and another computer with a Samsung computer, and now you're demanding a new computer with an LG display.  Too, you're complaining about the SSD speeds, gosh darn it.  It's clear that you'll never be satisfied.  Apple should give you your money back, and refuse to do business with you.
