Q: back up text messages

I have been having problems with my phone, and fear that I may have to reset and delete the entire thing. How or can I back up all text messages, or a particular conversation?

They are part of the backup, but you can only restore the whole backup, not parts of it.
iTunes: About iOS backups

There is 3rd party software, which let you look into the backup file and extract some files, for example
