Does the iPad 1 show video in hd or sd?

SD, if you're referring to videos displayed on the iPad itself. The screen is only 1024x768 which is lower even than 720p.

Actually, the first generation iPad CAN download and display HD content, however, it will be 720p not 1080p.

It will be displayed as SD, though. 720p is 1280×720, higher than the iPad 1 screen is capable of. I'm not even certain that the iPad 1 actually handled the 720p version or used the SD version which used to be downloaded automatically when the HD version was purchased. I don't think the iPad downsampled the 720p version. But I could be wrong on that point.
