There are many things that can impact on the performance of the Apple TV, the distance from the router is one of them and signal strength cannot be ignored, however there are other factors such as whether your network experiences interference or not.
Perhaps you could explain why you are asking and give your details in particular, so that we may answer your question more specifically.

Connection speed is also something to consider. You can check speedtest.net to verify what you are getting.
6mbps required for instant 720P
8mbps for 1080P
You can connect an iPad or Mac directly to the TV but that won't bypass network issues.

I was curious before going off and buying one. I didnt want to spend the money and regret it later ... I already have the tv shows and movies downlaoded to my mac so i think i will go in search of a lead to transfer the images across
