How to play/convert .WMV on Mac?

I am in a bit of a bind.

My brother recently passed away and on Monday we are holding his funeral. I was asked to create a slide show with photos and music to play during the funeral. I created a movie in Windows Movie Maker, but I just learned that the church uses a Mac for such things. Now, I've read that .WMV files will not work on a Mac, so is there any way I can format or convert my video so that it will play properly? I will not be able to download any type of plugin or anything on the church's computer, so it must be something I can do from my end. Also, if I save the movie to a DVD, will the Mac play it or will it not recognize it?

Quick responses will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Comiserations on the loss.

Flip4Mac is a free utility that will add WMV playback ability to Quicktime. If you want the more elaborate version that will convert then you have to pay for one of the "pro" versions.

Flip4Mac - http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.asp?prodid=flip4mac wmv - The free version will let Quicktime play but not convert Windows Media files.

After installation a new Flip4Mac pane will appear in System Preferences. Make sure you set the boxes to ensure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime.

Alternatively, VLC will play back WMV. There's also a fullscreen mode.

VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.

You can try an online converter if you cannot simply play it directly from YouTube at the church. .MOV or .MP4 should be acceptable.

One such site is: http://www.mediaconverter.org/ I have not used it -- I just got it off a web search. I would test any file first since such converters do not always work well and you wouldn't want to walk in 5 minutes before the service and find it was all garbled mess.

Note that any conversion will involve quality loss.

VLC isn't an invasive program. There are no viruses, etc. It is free. It will play just about anything. Given that a church can have media presentations in many different formats I would think it a very useful thing for them to have, but it's up to them.

I've downloaded VLC and am currently converting my video to .MP4. I also used the RealPlayer Converter to convert the video file into a format suitable for iPod, it's filed as a MPEG-4 Video File. That is an .MP4, correct? And it should be playable from a Mac computer?

Thank you once again for all of your help. I'm sorry for having to be so specific about the files and all, I just would like to be sure that the video will play.

I've just converted the video using another program a friend recommended into a .MOV file. Hopefully one of these will work well enough.

If you can believe it, I'm actually pretty good with this type of stuff, though not so much when it comes to Mac computers. I Google and learn as I go usually, trial and error, but as you can imagine, my head isn't in the right place and I can't afford for it to not work this time.

Thank you again, very much.
