I can no longer access my purchased files. I’ve searched these discussions with no luck and have received canned responses from Lawrence, Gregory, Kammie, David and Steven at the iTunes music store that were no help at all. Below is the summary of my problem. Maybe someone here has an idea of how to fix this problem. It should only require a simple permissions change, but…

Here is a summary of the problem:

I have only 1 authorized computer (WinXP Pro) and a 30 gig video ipod. iTunes worked fine on my authorized computer. I have played songs and viewed TV shows purchased through iTunes. Recently two changes occurred: I upgraded to the most recent version of iTunes and joined my employer's Domain. Both of these changes occurred between times that I synched with my ipod. The next time I synched my ipod, I was asked to authorize my computer, the one that was already authorized. I typed in my password and the received confirmation that the computer was authorized. Then I received an error. I do not remember that exact error. However, I can repeat the process and get an error which is probably the same. Here is what I do:

1) I open iTunes and click on a purchased file (song or video it doesn't matter)

2) An "Authorize Computer" popup window states: "This computer is not authorized to play "Uncle Lucius". Would you like to authorize it?

3) I type my name and password. Then I click "Authorize".

4) A new popup window (header "iTunes") states: "Machine Authorization was Successful" "You have authorized a total number of 1 machines out of your available 5". I then click "OK".

5) A new popup window (header "iTunes") states: "There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer." "The required file was not found or has permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try
again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed." Given that this is my only computer, the second option is not very helpful.

After reading the help files and related discussions, I changed the permissions of "My Music" folder where my iTunes folder resides:

1) I right clicked on My Music folder and clicked Sharing and Security.

2) On the "Sharing" tab I clicked "Share this folder" button. Then I clicked the permissions button and checked "Allow" Full Control, Change and Read for "Everyone".

3) On the "Security" tab I clicked the "Advanced" button and checked "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here." In the "Permission Entries" window, the Type "Allow" and Permission "Full Control" is given for all "Names" and "Apply To" this folder, subfolders and files.

None of this did any good. Gregory from the iTunes Music Store decided to deauthorize all my computers so I could start from scratch. Unfortunately, this did nothing and I get the same error messages.

My last response was from Lawrence at iTunes (another customer no service employee selected at random):

However, the nature of your question falls outside the type of support provided via email by the iTunes Music Store team. This is a help file for an Apple OS (I use XP) using older versions of iTunes. Translated to XP, it says to do what I already told them I did in the last set of steps 1-3 above. In other words, thank you for your purchases and we don't care if there is a glitch in our software.

So, anyone have any ideas or should I just throw my ipod away and move on?

Here's an update:
I copied the files to a CD and then imported them into iTunes on another computer on the same Domain. No problems at all. Authorization was granted and the files played. So why won't they play on my personal computer?!? This doesn't make sense.

I removed my laptop from my employers Domain and reinstalled iTunes. I still get the authorization failure on that computer. Seeing that my laptop is the computer that synchs with my ipod it's a big problem that it's the only computer that gets an authorization failure.

I found the culpit no thanks to Apple or iTunes "support". Here's the solution in case anyone else has this problem:

The culprit was the SCInfo file in the iTunes folder that must have been corrupted during my "upgrade" to the latest version of iTunes or when I joined my employers Domain.

I found the evil file by uninstalling iTunes, reinstalling (did no good), uninstalling again and looking for orphaned files. SCInfo was the only one left standing. I deleted that and reinstalled iTunes (twice because the first time important drivers did not install for some reason). Finally, I deleted my library itl file and imported my library xml file (again).

All back to normal now. This is a pretty easy fix when it comes down to it. After 6 back-and-forths with the "suport" team you think someone would have mentioned the SCInfo file, especially because I asked several times where the authorization info was stored.
