Q: why does my Canon Selphy cp 800 printer not show up in printer drivers?

Hi

I have an selphy cp 800. I tried to instal the Lion driver But no luck. i Bought this printer before i upgraded, and I am a bit frustrated that Apple or Canon doesent care.

Lion has been out for a year soon, and there is stil no update for lion os with a cp-800 printer driver?

Hope some one can help me My os is now 10.7.04

regards

To confirm, was it this CP800 driver for Lion that you tried to install? If yes, did the installer complete but now the printer is not seen by the Mac?

And I'm confused by your comment that there is no update. This driver came out in March this year for Lion so not sure what other update you are expecting.

My web browser got me to a page not found... Here is the link for img file.

    http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/serviceDetail;jsessionid=C0DC44CBA1A1D859A2A2077BA161 CC8B.estoreProd?m=load&directLink=Y&mid=4595B001&type=D&opt=1

I downloaded this file, and double clicked it to activate the file, but nothing happend. I then installed the old driver and tried to instal the downloaded driver agin, but i t didn´t work.

The printer is seen by the mac, but when i try to add it in system preferences, its says that apple does not make software for this printer, and i would have to download software form the manufactures website.

I Expected an upgrade that integrated the printer in lion. I never instaled drivers i leopard, why change this feature? I don´t get it

Sorry, not sure what happened with the previous link. Here it is again.

I just tried installing this file and it worked fine. I don't have this printer but at the point where you select the CP800 and it shows that Apple does not have software, change the menu to "Select printer software" and then type in CP8 and the driver should be listed. Select it, click OK and then click Add to complete the printer install.

As for the intergration, what happened in Leopard is that Apple included a number of printer drivers with the OS. In total there was about 3Gig of printers, most of which were no longer current. In the case of your CP800, the Gutenprint driver suite was also included and the CP800 was supported by Gutenprint. In Snow Leopard, Apple changed the driver installation so that only printers detected during the install were added. And with Lion, it was changed again so that drivers were downloaded from Apple, providing the vendor supplied the driver to Apple.

And as it turned out, the Gutenprint driver for the CP800 did not work.  It was dropped in the Gutenprint 5.2.8-pre1 release.  The version of Gutenprint that shipped with Leopard was 5.1.3.

Interesting Matt. So no version of the Gutenprint CP800 driver ever worked?

I'm reasonably sure that there was no Canon CP800 driver included with Leopard, so I don't know how this would have just worked without a driver being downloaded and installed.

Interesting Matt. So no version of the Gutenprint CP800 driver ever worked?

That is my current, best understanding.  There is a relatively new maintiner for the Canon code at Gutenprint.  He has done a lot of work over the past year or so.  One of the things I think he discovered is that there were certain Selphy printers that need an "intelligent spooler".  That is, they won't work with a standard USB backend.  I think the Gutenprint driver tried to trick CUPS--and may have had some success--by sending image data in one packet and control data in another.  It was something like that.

It would be fairly easy to see if they work by loading the 5.1.3 or just about any version prior to about 5.2.7 and test the printer.  All the packages are still on the server at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/.  That exercise may not be the best idea for the original poster at this point as there is a Canon supported driver available.

I just went back and loaded the Canon drivers in a Leopard installation from the Leopard install disk.  The Selphy drivers go up to CP-790.  There is no CP-800 that came with Leopard.
