Macbook pro is slow to wake up after sleep

I seem to have same issue - when I open my rMBP I expected it to start up before I finished opening it up. Just like the video on Apples website. But mine takes a few seconds - first the screen is black, then the pointer shows up, then a few seconds later the Login screen shows up. I expeced the login screen to just pop open as soon as opened the screen. If I shut the lid then open too quickly - the screen stayed black for a few seconds longer but eventually starts up. I would like to note that it only takes like 5 seconds to pop open - not 30 like the previous note. I may just have too high an expectation ;-) ... other than that - all good!

On the Retina MacBook Pro, after an hour or so of normal sleep (may be less - not sure) the machine goes into deep sleep mode (I believe this is slightly different behaviour to previous non-ssd models).

This causes the machine to breifly pause whilst waking up again, if awoken within an hour, you should still see very fast wakeup 🙂

SafeSleep significantly improved the situation (IMHO) and has the added benefit of automatically enabling hibernation when the battery is low and the machine's lid is closed. For me this resolved the issues I have seen relating to upgrading from HDD to ADATA SSD which I have encountered.

I've been having this same problem. It seems to be due to "Standby" mode on the Retina MBP. See this article for more info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4392

Not sure if this can be fixed necessarily since the system saves the contents of the RAM to the hard drive and then powers off the RAM. It takes a few seconds for everything to turn back on & load the memory back into the RAM.

I just wish there was a way to turn Standby mode OFF & just use regular sleep. (if the delay can't be fixed of course)

I tested this to be the case as every time I open the lid when the computer is plugged in, it is very quick. Same when opening the lid after less than an hour of sleep.

I completely agree with you. IF the delay can not be fixed, this is what Apple should do.

I agree, same problem with my MacBook. Have had MB's since 2005 and never had this problem before; it seems to be within the last 4-5 months?

I had this problem last week and I went into the genius bar and they said to get it replaced and I did. It's still happening. Even when I wake it up after a few minutes of sleep it's still really slow 5-10 seconds to wake up even though I've upgraded to mountain lion and installed the power nap update. I guess we'll have to wait for apple to fix it.

As a warning, once disabled, the Mac will not put itself into safe sleep to conserve power and if left for a few days, will likely drain the battery and lose the contents of the memory

however, it *should* mean instant wakeups every time.

There are instructions for re-enabling as well, should you dislike it 🙂

I think Safe Sleep is different than Standby. Safe Sleep has been around since 2006 or so & helps you resume where you left off if the battery dies while in sleep mode. Which is the only time that you are actually using Safe Sleep.

Standby is only supported on the MacBook Air (Mid 2010) and later & MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). After 1 hour in sleep mode on battery power, the computer saves RAM contents to the HD & powers off more components to give you longer battery life.

Actually after installing the power nap update it's got worse, when it's backing up through time machine and doing other things which power nap is supposed to do when I open the lid sometimes it doesn't come back on at all and I have to close it a number of times until it wakes back up. This is becoming a nuisance. SSDs were supposed to make everything faster and instant. It seems that they have slowed them down instead.

Same here - waking after sleep sometimes takes as long as 20 seconds, other times it's instantaneous. I haven't tested the 1 hour deep sleep to see if it's instant before the 1 hour mark and slow AFTER the one our mark.

Frustrating given that instant on is supposed to be one of the features of this new generation of Macs with SSDs.

I have the same problem on my Retina MBP and my wife's MacBook Air. With my Retina, before installing Mountain Lion, I was so impressed and proud of how instantaneous my laptop would wake from sleep. Now it's almost slower than my previous 2008 MBP running Lion. I'm guessing this will be fixed with an update soon

I can understand the advantage of Standby: the battery will last for up to 30 days, which is pretty cool. And it makes sense that this might take longer to wake up if OSX has to load everything back into RAM. But the current impact on the everyday user experience is pretty awful. I'm used to my old MBP waking from sleep very quickly and the new MBP Retina takes ages.

Given that Apple probably can't make the wake-up instantaneous due to having to repopulate the RAM, there is a couple of things I think they should do:

(1) They need a 'loading' symbol or progress bar to be shown while the machine wakes up from Standby. This indicates that something is happening and we need to wait. At the moment you see the login box but it is frozen. This is bad because you start typing your password and nothing happens, so it feels broken. I think this makes the problem feel a lot worse.

(2) Perhaps there should be an option in System Preferences to disable Standby mode.

You can use pmset to increase the delay it waits before hibernating after sleep:

sudo pmset -a standbydelay 86400 #hibernate after sleeping for 24 hours

Or disable it altogether:

sudo pmset -a standby 0

I think I have stopped this happening on my MBP Retina by turning off Power Nap. After every slow wake up I noticed my Time Machine disk (in a Time Capsule) mounted on the desktop. Quick awakenings - no TM disk mounted. I assumed it was due to TM backups being underway while I was trying to wake it up.
