Turned off a bunch of apps, did the manual backup as suggested, and it worked. Now the question is, which app was causing the problem. I can't help much with that, except that I turned off Reminders, Safari, Home, News, wallet, Photos, Icloud drive and keychain.

Also, noticed earlier, that the amount of space I had for backups, 5GB, was less then the amount of the estimated size of the backup. I had already fixed that by turning off backing up some of these. A better error message would be nice, for example when I was trying to back up more then I had room for, an Insufficient space notice would have been helpful. A message explaining why the backup failed, it had to generate an error code somewhere, or the programmers are really lazy, configuration management is non-existent and testing just plain is being left up to the customers. Reminding me of college computer classes, and not professional IT.

Welcome to the Apple Community.

If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

Backup not successful: I had the same problem.

The solution was to turn off some apps (Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device in the Backups section, then look under Backup options) and try a manual backup. If it didn't work, turn off a few more apps and try a backup. Keep doing that until the backup works. Then try adding in some of the last batch of apps that were previously turned off - the objective is to find the app that causes the backup to fail. For me, I suspect that the one app I found had a bad data file that, when included in the backup, caused the backup to quit.

This can be a long process if you have a lot of apps that you originally turned on for backups.
