Have tried everything - restarting, resetting, and couple of other forum tricks..
For instance, on my macbookpro there's no file called com.apple.safari.plist (see other discussion)
Please help.

The file is there, but is in your user Library, hidden by default in Lion (hold the option key while clicking on the Finder's 'Go' menu to see it). However the relevant file is actually (user)/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist, and in any case you shouldn't tamper with it.

and I don't know whether you were expecting to see the Bookmarks at icloud.com but they do not appear there.
