Q: How can be this possible??

I bought a new iPhone and have been using it for a few weeks. I've configured it and installed several apps from App Store.

Few days ago I decided that it's time to connect it to the PC for the first time and sync it with iTunes. I installed clean iTunes on Windows, connected via USB cable and synchronization has started automatically. What amazed and shocked me was that iTunes treated the data in clean iTunes as a Master data (not the iPhone data as I expected). I expected that after synchronization i will have in iTunes all my apps that I downloaded and configured through the iPhone (without touching PC) but what happened is that the sync process wiped out all applications in iPhone and made iPhone like it was in iTunes... How is this possible?? I guess every average user sooner or later will have the same issue when syncing iPhone for the first time... I haven't seen even a single warning about what is going to happen... Is this normal or I made something wrong?

You DID get a warning from iTunes before syncing for the first time that all content on the phone would be erased and replaced with the content on the computer (which had no content). It was a dialog that required that you agree to it. iTunes content is one way only, from computer to iPhone. Other data (contacts, calendar, etc) is two way if you set up apps to sync to on your computer.

All of this is explained in the manual.

As all of your iTunes content was purchased from the iTunes store you can download it again. First download it to either the iPhone or your computer. If you download it to your phone, connect the phone to your computer, but do not sync (go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab, before connecting, and check the box to not sync automatically). Right click on its name in the left column and choose "transfer purchases from...".

Then connect the phone to your computer, right click on its name in iTunes, and choose "Restore from Backup".

Syncing cannot occur automatically if there are no items selected under the various tabs for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, which must be manually selected.

The first time you connect a new iPhone to iTunes the first time that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device, or set up the iPhone as a new iPhone with iTunes. None of this is automatic.

If you choose the latter - as a new iPhone, you must manually select the items under the various tabs for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. Nothing can be selected automatically with this selection. If there are any apps or music on the iPhone that are not in your iTunes library on your computer and you select Sync Music under the Music tab and Sync Apps under the Apps tab, a warning message is provided indicating all iTunes content will be erased from the iPhone first.

iTunes on your computer is the master.

You can re-download all music and apps.
