Using Canon ZR20 as an analog to digital converter?

I am trying to import some VHS tapes to iMovie. Using my ZR20, I seem to need to convert to miniDV first. Is it possible to use this camcorder without first converting? The RCA import jacks seem to disable the Firewire output jacks when used concurrently.
