Jam Pack Help

My computer finally died on me so I decided to get a new imac today. Bad news is that I am about ready to throw it through a window because even though I had the Jam Packs backed up on an external hard drive, I am having several issues. I can see that I have the .aif files now onto my new computer from a couple of the jam packs, and I've even moved those files over to the apple loops folder where all the rest of the pre loaded loops are, yet they do not show up as usable in Garageband, nor do I see any of the virtual instruments. I'm also getting the issue I've seen others have where some of the jam packs are not compatible w/ Lion. I saw there is a work around, but the problem is that I do not have the original discs and only have the files from my external hard drive and am getting the "you can't open the application packagebuddy because power pc applications are no longer supported" message. So this is causing me a lot of **** because I've transfered over some .band files from my hard drive, but without the same loops and software instruments I used before, my projects are a mess. Any ideas? I also saw something about an app called Main Stage that supposedly has all the Jam Pack content. Is this true?

That is true. If you buy MainStage 2, it will install all of the JamPacks, and you will be able to use the loops and instruments from Logic and GarageBand. An the price of MainStage is much less than the price for one single of the JamPack - in Europe 23,99 €, that is roughly 30 $US.

To buy MainStage would be the easiest solution.

To restore the older JamPacks from your backup, you need to

  1. install the loops in /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Apple Loops for GarageBand/
  2. and the instruments in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/
  3. Also you need to reindex your Loops, see: Rebuilding the Loop Index in GarageBand

Thank you so much for the response. I am going to toy around with getting everything from the back up, though I really have no idea what to do about the jam packs with the "no longer supported" messages. So all in all I'm glad to know that Mainstage does in fact have everything for $30 and hopefully when installed I can still open my old .band files from my backup with no problems.

"you can't open the application packagebuddy because power pc applications are no longer supported"

I don't have any of the older Jam Packs installers available right now, but as far as I remember, you could look inside the packages by ctrl-clicking them (Show Package contents) and try to find the loops and instruments. Also the installers get pretty far with the installation, before the "package buddy " error message appears. Probably the loops and instruments will be there, and only need reindexing in the loop index.

My old projects all work after the Mainstage 2 intallation. If you want to try that, it would be best not to start with a partial installation, but to remove your old JamPack installation, reinstall GarageBand and then to install MainStage.

Good Luck

Sorry to be a nag on this, but I did a bit of research online and am finding some conflicting info. I found a few comments of people saying that the Main Stage loops can only be used in garageband but not the software instruments. For clarificaiton, will both the loops and instruments be available as options to use directly in Garage Band? I want to do all my recording into Garage band and just have all the loops/instruments there. Is that what I'll be able to do?

Hey I've actually stumbled across another problem now and wanted to see if you know what to do. I've noticed that some of my software instruments are not available. For example, if I go to select the "Subby Bass" bass setting, I get this message EXS24 instrument “Subby Bass.exs”:Audio file “IL P-Bass bomb 21.aif” not found! and it gives me options of continue and try again. I try to just do a search in my finder for the file name, but nothing. I find this odd. Any idea what's goin on?
