Can I connect my Time Capsule to my PS3 to watch videos stored on the TC?

My PS3 can't find any Time Capsule Drive when I browse the media servers. My Time Capsule is a 3TB Version. I also want to see my pictures stored on the Time Capsule over the PS3.

Thanks in advance....

Firstly PS3 will use SMB networking.. so the TC name and wireless name if used should be short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.

Then go to the disk page in the utility and for file sharing, turn on the guest account with full read and write permissions.

Then make sure the PC workgroup is set correctly.. ie WORKGROUP.

I do not have a ps3 to know what it will come up as, but you files should be on a directory created by guest account.. and not itunes.. it has to be the raw files you are playing in a format the PS3 can read.

The short answer is no, you can't use a Time Capsule with a PS 3. If you want to stream files to your PS 3 you need a DLNA compatible media server. You can install DLNA server software on your computer and use it to stream media files from your TC to your PS 3, but you can't stream files directly to a PS 3 from a TC. NAS devices from QNAP and Synology include DLNA compatible media server software, but the TC does not.

You can play files from a TC .. but you are not able to stream from the TC.. I don't think that was the question.. if the file is stored on the TC in a format the PS3 can read, then the PS3 is the media player. Not the TC..

But you are correct the TC is dumb router with a hard disk hanging off it. Nothing more.

Plenty of suitable file formats.

There is no reason a PS3 cannot play from those files.. !!

Ok.. sorry I am not using a PS3 but I would have assumed it could access a network drive.. doing a quick google that is incorrect...

You need a media player inbetween to stream the file to the PS3.

Buy Apple TV.. but then you are trapped to iTunes.. unless you JB it.

I am having fun at the moment with Apple TV 1.. which is old but really an excellent piece of hardware once you install a video decoder chip.. and run crystalbuntu..

ATV 2 is last that can be JB.. and is selling for huge premium on ebay due to that. New ATV 3 is still locked solid.

But an ATV1 with crystal broadcom card.. is actually great.

In the early years of the original PS 3 you could install Linux on a PS 3 and use it as a Linux PC, which would give you access to network drives, but the native PS 3 software has never supported direct access to files stored on network shares. Much to the dismay of original PS 3 owners, however, Sony disabled Linux support on early model PS 3s with a software update that followed the release of the PS 3 Slim, so it is no longer possible to run Linux on an original PS 3 that has software updates applied.

There have also been third-party hacks that extended the capabilities of a PS 3, but Sony has a tendency to disable hacks when they discover them by releasing software updates that target them. In a few cases they have actually sued software developers for releasing PS 3 hacks because Sony claims that all third-party enchancements to the PS 3 OS violate Sony's intellectual property rights.

I have been impressed with my QNAP TS-112 NAS since the demise of my TC. It includes both a DLNA server and an iTunes server. The DLNA server shows up as a media server on the PS 3 and the iTunes server shows up in iTunes on all of the Macs on the network. It also does both Samba and AFP, so file sharing in a mixed-platform environment is easy.

The only advantage a TC has over the QNAP is its integrated router and ease of use for Time Machine backups (QNAP also supports Time Machine), but my TC's wifi performance was so poor I added a more robust wifi router to the network last year, so the TC hasn't been missed since its power supply died a few weeks ago.
