Q: Help for iMac updates

Hello folks! After one year w/out internet; first thing I did was try to update my computer. It didn't work just using the automatic bar key. I then went to Apple site (https): download area and did it manually for the security package.  It worked: my buid now is 9L31a (for Leopard X5.8) The problems is that now I have problems to watch videos: it keeps asking me for Adobe Flash Player. Meanwhile, I keep getting the same software update over and over again: FlashBackRemovalUpdate. I read about sth on the subject of flash prblms and followed the instructions to see if I were infectected by using terminal: no problms. Everyth was apparently all right. I dind't even need to remove anything, but the Automatic Update did it by itself, but I don't get the link to download the good one furnished by Apple.Does anybody know it?  1b) I saw My firewall allows "Java Preferences.app" - though it blocket iTunes and real Player. Should I leave it this way?

2) I tried Disk utility. before updating mannually and got the info that some permissions are incorrect and could not be repaired. What sould I do?

Which means you need to install it from the Adobe web site as Apple has not provided updates for several years now. Since you are posting in the iMac (Intel) forum you should be able to do that here http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.

Meanwhile, I keep getting the same software update over and over again: FlashBackRemovalUpdate. I read about sth on the subject of flash prblms and followed the instructions to see if I were infectected by using terminal: no problms.

Flashback has nothing to do with Flash any more and the instructions for using the terminal will not work for all variants, so you need to run the update that Apple has provided to check for ALL commonly installed versions.

Everyth was apparently all right. I dind't even need to remove anything, but the Automatic Update did it by itself, but I don't get the link to download the good one furnished by Apple.Does anybody know it?

If you have run everything that Software Update tells you to and it says that there is nothing to install than you need to believe that and move on.

1b) I saw My firewall allows "Java Preferences.app" - though it blocket iTunes and real Player. Should I leave it this way?

Those are probably settings you approved at the time.  Java Preferences needs access to tell you when there is a Java update, but it's almost certain that there will never be for your OS.  I don't know why you would want to block iTunes.  Real Player probably blocks advertising, so you can leave it that way unless you find it no longer works.

    2) I tried Disk utility. before updating mannually and got the info that some permissions are incorrect and could not be repaired. What sould I do?

Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

Let's make it clear.  All I said concerns the update, that I only succeeded manually after having run disk veryfication and asking for correction. A coincidence?  Don't know. But Now my iMac Leopard version is updated as I said to buid 9L31a - From a glance I took in Apple Update support site, I guess that's what's supposed to be. I'm insecure cause I had never done it before. It always worked just from the upperbar: automatic update.

    All clear now.

The problems were: 1)  I keep getting the same software update (above mentioned) which had been downloaded some times: "FlashBackRemovalUpdate.dmg" : Q1)  If it was perfectly installed, why does it still automatically download again and again? 1b) How can I stop it? ;  Q2) After restarting the computer after this download, I could play some news-video I was used to. I read that the download above (FRupdt) would give a link to download the correct adobe Flash player and not a fake one. No links gotten.  You send me one. I downloaded and NOW the videos are playing again. THANKS.

Q3) Concerning the Disk utility msgs I understood  need to correct the disk (not the permissions) from Apple DVD - I found this answer somewhere. Thx to Apple community.

Q4 abt firewall: I did nothing. I never regulated Apple firewall before; just PC. Didn't even know I could. Thx again to you I'll give the permissions to You tube and Real Player.

NEW QUESTION: In the sharing permissions, I found a Remote Login Adress. Who could have created that? My Internet provider ? For what?  Can I keep it OFF ?

I don't know exactly what you mean by "upperbar: automatic update" but I can confirm that you have the latest version of Mac OS X 10.5.  The build version does not change when you apply updates such as Security Updates, Java Updates, Flashback Removal Tool, etc.  It only reflects that you are running 10.5.8 which may or may not be fully up-to-date with any other Apple updates.

)  I keep getting the same software update (above mentioned) which had been downloaded some times: "FlashBackRemovalUpdate.dmg" : Q1)  If it was perfectly installed, why does it still automatically download again and again? 1b) How can I stop it?

OK, now I understand. I don't think I recall having seen that discussed and don't have a solution for you. To verify that it has been installed, select  -> System Preferences -> Software Updates -> Installed Updates tab and see if that update is listed.  You should also have a file in /Library/Receipts/boms/ that would be something like "com.apple.pkg.FlashBackRemovalUpdate.bom".

Q2) After restarting the computer after this download, I could play some news-video I was used to. I read that the download above (FRupdt) would give a link to download the correct adobe Flash player and not a fake one. No links gotten.  You send me one. Great!

    ...

Q4 abt firewall: I did nothing. I never regulated Apple firewall before; just PC. Didn't even know I could. Thx again to you I'll give the permissions to You tube and Real Player.

You may not have realized it because normally make changes to the Firewall by responding to a popup that appears when you first launch an application asking if you want to allow that app to access the internet or not. Here's the one I get for Java PreferencesPicture 12.png

NEW QUESTION: In the sharing permissions, I found a Remote Login Adress. Who could have created that? My Internet provider ? For what?  Can I keep it OFF ?

Where is this? Is it the Computer Name: at the top of the window? That was simply created when you set up your computer and cannot be used unless you turn on one of the services shown and is perfectly normal. Leave it alone or change it to something you would rather the computer be known as.

Are any of them on? If Remote Login is active, who shows up as being allowed access? The only way these can be changed is by somebody who has physical access to your computer. Your ISP cannot change any of them. They are normally all off.

First of all, than you so much 4 ALL yr help. 2nd, sorry 4 my low knowledge and inexperience in this community. Tehn, clearing up again, When I say upperbar, I ean this that u wrote: "  -> System Preferences -> Software Updates" There is where I keep getting over and over again the same update already installed: Remove.... And now I've just repeated (to follow yr instructions ) and I got it again + another prblm: once again an iTunes update 4 Lion. Shouldn't it know by itself my system is not Lion?

Now, answering yr qstions: No, I did NOT find  "com.apple.pkg.FlashBackRemovalUpdate.bom" in the folder you said. I attached the image.

    2) Yes, u're right abt the window 4 permission. Next time I allow it. Thx !  3) fo the Login - I got it and solved th problem. Now evrth is off. Thx again to you and another reading 4) Thax 4 the computername:  you explain things so well. Are you a teacher?

    5) Concerning physical access.... well,... Why NO internet 4 a year?? --> cz  I had been broken in by "someone (from university community) who had material access to my machine and network provider ". How can I know I'm definitely rid of it/him/them?   I did not re-install the machine cause I wanted to track him; so, I moved away and changed the provider. is it enoughly safe to surf?

    - Thank you so much for all help.

Someone in another forum just posted a tip on a different issue involving Software Update.  He found an old /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.lock which should not be there at all after an successful update process completes. If you find it, throw it in the trash.

If you don't find it or even if you do and it doesn't solve the problem, try dragging /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist to your desktop, then run a manual Software Update check to see what happens. If that works you can trash the old .plist.

This sounds like you must have hit the spacebar while the file was still highlighted and you got a QuickLook window.

In any case, it looks quite corrupt to me, and not much like mine

Thank you anyway. You know what? I'll do CD1 for disk correction. Then scan with the new anti virus i downloaded that seems to be the most mentioned one: clamXav. If the problem continues I'll have to ctc Apple Support. But you helped me out. Thanks

Now, answering yr qstions: No, I did NOT find  "com.apple.pkg.FlashBackRemovalUpdate.bom" in the folder you said. I attached the image.

I feel confident that this is all due to your corrupt plist. Now that it's been removed SU should start working properly.

    4) Thax 4 the computername:  you explain things so well. Are you a teacher?

No, I've had a number of different jobs in my life and many have involved teaching, but it was never my primary vocation.  I got started helping troubleshoot Mac problems for a User Group I belonged to back in the 80's and it's been a hobby ever since.

It should be now that you have turned off all the sharing options. You didn't mention whether or not he was listed as a remote login user or not. The only other thing would be to change any passwords you use on the internet, but after 4 years if that person hasn't hacked those accounts, they are probably OK.

Again, without knowing what it is I can't say. As long as it's off I don't see how it could do any harm by keeping it.

Can't hurt anything, but it's not the most probable cause of your problems.

You mentioned having permissions that could not be repaired, but did not list them. If you still have that issue after running the disk repair, post them here so I can get an idea of how they might be contributing to your problems.

Then scan with the new anti virus i downloaded that seems to be the most mentioned one: clamXav.

Finally you mention the only reason I even checked in here. I provide uncompensated Tech Support on the ClamXav Forum, so if you run into problems come visit us there.

Hi! Just a correction: I said 4 a year (for one year) and not "4 years".

He had physical access to my machine for months, when I was out and via internet network. So he had enough time to install whatever he wanted. That's why I stayed so long disconnected. no time to invest on it. Now I have to. It's time I did. Either I find a good scan or a reinstall cause a secure specialist charged me the equivalent of 3 thousand dollars for the srvc, saying that if I can get back the problems when I migrate from Time machine.
