Q: Help for iMac updates

Hello folks! After one year w/out internet; first thing I did was try to update my computer. It didn't work just using the automatic bar key. I then went to Apple site (https): download area and did it manually for the security package.  It worked: my buid now is 9L31a (for Leopard X5.8) The problems is that now I have problems to watch videos: it keeps asking me for Adobe Flash Player. Meanwhile, I keep getting the same software update over and over again: FlashBackRemovalUpdate. I read about sth on the subject of flash prblms and followed the instructions to see if I were infectected by using terminal: no problms. Everyth was apparently all right. I dind't even need to remove anything, but the Automatic Update did it by itself, but I don't get the link to download the good one furnished by Apple.Does anybody know it?  1b) I saw My firewall allows "Java Preferences.app" - though it blocket iTunes and real Player. Should I leave it this way?

2) I tried Disk utility. before updating mannually and got the info that some permissions are incorrect and could not be repaired. What sould I do?

The software updates but install is not completed.

    1) Could it be that I am having problems with updates because I turned off Remote Apple events in the syst pref > network >  sharing ?

Anyway, I'll try to fix the disk tomorrow and then let you know abt the result.

    the last one:

    2) With the system below, can I upgrade to Lion?

      Processor Speed:          2.66 GHz

    As for Sentry,  What's it?

It's the real-time scan capability that comes with ClamXav to keep track of new files in whatever directory you set up for it to watch. You had to turn it on yourself as it comes turned off, so if you don't really need it then go back to the ClamXav preferences and turn it off.

Ok I copied and glued it down here. You should erase it later:nothing especial:

I didn't ask for that. Those are entries from you Console Message log, not the ClamXavSentry-scan.log. There is no reason to even look at that log for any type of ClamXav information.

Again, you will get a pop-up notice from Sentry if there are any problems.

And I cannot erase it. If there's some sensitive information then you need to remove it before posting or don't post it at all.  IMHO, there is absolutely nothing sensitive about what's in that log.

Message was edited by: MadMacs0. I'm really not interested in any ClamXav info right now, as it seems to have come up empty. What I am curious about is what MacScan found for SpyWare.

That is not good. I don't really think it's worth spending any more time on it. Time to backup your files, wipe the drive and start with a fresh System install, in my opinion.

    1) Could it be that I am having problems with updates because I turned off Remote Apple events in the syst pref > network >  sharing ?

Don't you mean System Preferences > Sharing?

Absolutely not. I have not had anything turned on there for a very long time and my System Updates have been working perfectly.

I don't know. According to MacTracker it looks like you have an Early 2009 iMac which can run the latest version of Mac OS X. Lion requirements are Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor, 2 GB of RAM, 7 GB of disk space, and Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended). I'm fairly certain you will find it running much better with 4GB of RAM.

The question I have for you is, where will you get a copy of Lion? It's was only available from the AppStore (which is why you need 10.6.6 or greater) or if you can still get 10.7 on a USB stick. Since Mountain Lion came out today, Lion is no longer available from the AppStore. There is no Apple OS X software for sale at the Apple Store at http://store.apple.com but sometimes you can still get things like that by calling the 800 number.

So I went to the links you told me to clone. But after reading I asked myself - doesnt Time Machine do what they say? couldn't see the difference / use of it. Sorry for my ignorance. could you clear it up for me?

Also, you've been helping me a lot. I don't know why one of my  thread is there as it it were the responst/solution for my problem. Not really.

I did mark your thread of "Jul 25, 2012 7:28 PM" as a solution. but not the one that it is there, which is my text/explanation of prblms.

    So sorry for it.

I've got a few comments to give you, but let me start with this.

    Socorro-Mac wrote:

I am not understanding why. First, I thought your primary concern was what has been installed on your Mac that you don't know about which may or may not be causing other issues or resulting in loss of private information.

I mentioned before that MacScan is well known for issuing "False Alarms" when it identifies infected files, so what you isolated could well be files you need for almost any purpose. Since you no longer have the MacScan window open and it does not keep a log of it's findings, I asked you what files were in the folder on your desktop "MacScan MacScan Isolated Spyware"? That is your only hope of figuring out what you may have been infected by and/or files that have been misidentified as infected.

This is a perfect example of why I told you that you must run these updates via Software Update. You are trying to install an update out of order and it can't locate the correct versions of some files it needs. Your entire OS X is hosed and needs to be reinstalled from the original disks, then updated until there's nothing else to be installed. You aren't going to be able to patch it up at this point.

I couldn't run the IDisk verification either. Neither from the original DVD. I touch the "D" key during re-start, but the user log in page come.

I thought it was the "C" key to boot from CD/DVD drive. The "D" key is for something else, maybe the Hardware test on some machines.  Or you can stick the DVD in, double-click on the installer and it will set itself up as the boot drive.

So I went to the links you told me to clone. But after reading I asked myself - doesnt Time Machine do what they say? couldn't see the difference / use of it. Sorry for my ignorance. could you clear it up for me?

You cannot boot from TimeMachine and you have to use the TimeMachine application in order to restore anything or migrate from the TimeMachine volume after reinstalling the OS.

With the CCC or SD! software you can create a bootable clone and be back in business immediately. But now that I see your OS is completely borked, there's no reason to go that route anyway.

Also, you've been helping me a lot. I don't know why one of my  thread is there as it it were the responst/solution for my problem. Not really.

Well, thanks for thinking about it, but I'm not here for any points, so don't worry about it.

Well, let's go point by point.

    1) No, I did NOT try to update ANYTHING by myself, except after the automatic software update showed prblms , which was 1à minutes after I connected to the internet after March 3rd 2012.

    2) How come did I find yesterday paquets d'installation in the root account and many other things that I had never seen before, including in the core folder. By the way I was NOT the one who activated the Root account and it took me a while yesterday to finally disabled the password and successfully enter it. But I succed - 10 points for me.

    3) Yes, I did found  A LOT OF bizarre things (from my point of view). If theyre Ok. Great. Better for me; but the thing is that it was just after entering Root that I finally succeeded in installing the updates necessary, that had been downloaded but were in different folders and in different types (.dist, .pkg, .dm, ...) and in different sizes too. I finally found the good one and sucessfully installed it. I did the same with the iTunes and the FlasbackRemovalSecurity. After that, I turned off the machine and once again tried to repair the DIsk. Couldn't. Tried with the DVD's - they didn't even load. After some readings and tries, I decided to call Apple Care.

    - Great !!! I not only succeeded in accessing the DVD and repairing the Disk, but also could discovered that somehow, someone activated the Root account and installed a firmware password. But we succeeded in solving this prblm too. Now I just want to know who made all those changes in my System before reinstalling it all from 7 zeros. And I WILL.

    4) Thanks for all your help. But if there was any come back to old updates, it is when I accepted yr instructions to do so to solve problems. I don't think it caused me any problems, but be sure that I am NOT that stupid to try to install sth new than something old. The first thing I did when I connected the machine to the internet, as I said before, was  to click apple in the upperbar and check fo software updates.

    5) Thanks for all help. I learned a lot with you. I even installed another AV! and read abt cloning. After finish my tracking and discover who has changed my system configuration (including bluetooth and airport, internet noyaux, sharing permissions, phishing, samba, etc..., who erased my first back up in TM (right after Apple installed a new HD), then, I will make a back up out of TM and Reinstal, formate it all and bring back my docs. I just don't know what/how I'll do it with iTunes, iCall and Adress book yet; but I'll learn soon.

    Thnks for all

I know and I thought we decided that fixing Software Updates was the very first thing that needed to be done. Did it ever work?

    2) How come did I find yesterday paquets d'installation in the root account and many other things that I had never seen before, including in the core folder. Yes, at least 10 points, but you left that last part out.

    3) Yes, I did found  A LOT OF bizarre things (from my point of view). If theyre Ok. Great. Well, I'm fairly certain Software Update initally puts them all in the same place and they almost always arrive as .pkg, .mpkg and .dist is OK, although I don't believe I've ever seen it outside of a .pkg/.mpkg file. Those that are downloaded from Apple Downloads end up in whatever download folder is designated by your browser and are .dmg image files that must be mounted before you can run the installer package.

I finally found the good one and sucessfully installed it. I did the same with the iTunes and the FlasbackRemovalSecurity. Yes, I did. But to prouve I need to track him down to his machine, no? Or the machine he is using to track me by internet. but how can I? I found some softwares some time ago but that showed me everybody connected in the network. Another one showed me everybody connected to my internet provider (can you imagine the list?)  I need to find sth in my cmachine, when it's off.

The log that shows the IP of who is allowed through your firewall is /var/log/appfirewall.log and there can be up to six historical logs with that name.  If it's like mine it will be full of failed attempts from all over the world, which is perfectly normal. It's the ones it let through you need to pay attention to.
