Quicktime fails to install because of Apple Software Update error

When trying to install Quicktime I get this error:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I found a help page on this and it says I need to fix Apple Software Update to fix the error. I try to run Apple Software Update but it gives me an error message. Where can I download a new copy of Apple Software Update? I have tried googling but cannot find this...

Windows 7

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

"Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi' in the box below."

Then when I click Cancel it says "An installation package for the product 'Apple Software Update' cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi' "

🙂 that's absolutely perfect, thank you.

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the User uploaded file "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)

(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.

(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:

(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Does it go through properly this time?

I don't have iTunes and if possible would rather not download it, unless that's required for QuickTime. It's just QuickTime I am wanting to install?

Oh, my apologies ... I didn't amend the cut and paste of my instructions properly (The There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor message tend to crop up most commonly with itunes installs nowadays, and my head was stuck in that rut, I think).

Don't install iTunes ... rather, after following the instructions re downloading and using Windows Installer CleanUp, install the update for the QuickTime Player using a QuickTimeInstaller.exe installer file downloaded from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

(This should also replace your damaged ASU with a working copy.)

Thank you, seem to be nearly there. It gave me the option to "Repair" or "Remove" QuickTime on installation. I tried "Repair" and i seemed to install bu then gave me the error "QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # -2093. Please make sure QuickTime is properly installed on this computer" when I tried to run QuickTime.

So I removed QuickTime using the same tool and then did a new install of QuickTime from fresh. This time the install failed with the error message "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\9C4307835821FFF47864EE6DABC09AA9\890B46E081086524AB323C614AA 39D0B. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

... still making progress:

"Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\9C4307835821FFF47864EE6DABC09AA9\890B46E081086524AB323C614AA 39D0B. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

That's another one that tends to hit iTunes installs more often. Try steps 2 through 17 of the following user tip, and then try installing the QuickTime Player again:

"Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

I received the error in Step 14A:

(14a) If (after clicking Apply) you receive a "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys" message, click OK:

After following the 17 steps and attempting an install of QuickTime again I still receive the "could not open key" error. Incidentally I am sole user and administrator on the PC (Windows 7 64-bit).

I'm off to bed (in the EU) but will check back tomorrow to see if you have more suggestions, thank you.

Okay ... tomorrow let's first try MacWilder's suggestion from the following post:

Re "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

... but if no joy there, let's give the fixit from the following Microsoft document a try, just in case:
