New MacBook Air 11" 2012 does not recognize 3G dongle

Hello,

Bought the new 11" 2012 MacBook Air last week. Unfortunately I can't use my 3G dongle with it. (it's a T-Mobile branded Huawei E173) The Air just doesnt recognize it. Even not as disc image. When I plug it into my 15" 2009 MacBook Pro it just works fine. Disc image with the pre-installed software pops up and it can be used to access the internet. It works fine on my 2008 Mac Mini as well and tested it on my dad's 2010 iMac as well. It just won't work in my Air. Any idea??

Thethering from my iPhone is not an option because T-mobile has blocked that. Mifi is too big for my pocket and I don't want to think about charging it all the time. So a dongle is the way to go for me.

Thanks in advance.

IMHO it seems to be related to 64 b kernel extensions for USB, the new Apple USB 3 ports and some devices. That would explain:

– The issue exists either on Lion or Mountain Lion (64 b), but doesn't on Windows or Diagnosis OS.

– The modem works fine when is connected through a hub or to other Apple USB 2 ports.

– Some other models DO work without any problem.

I don't know how useful this will be but found it on another forum. I bought the Vodafone mobile broadband (K3770)and it wouldn't work either. I clicked this link and clicked the link in the middle of the page to downloaded the software for a mac. After I done this the mobile internet worked fine...

Hope it helps some of you that have Vodafone.

Would maybe suggest then that this is a software issue as many of you have concluded already.

I was having the same problem with a June 2012 Macbook Air 13" and a Huawei E173 USB 3G dongle. When I first tried it in June, it worked the first time, then never again. Not even any lights when it was plugged in, and the Macbook didn't recognise it at all. Same problem I think most of you were having.

But then I was trying again a few days ago after the Apple software updates and accidentally got it to work. Basically I plugged it into the USB slot, and, as usual, nothing would happen. But one time I left the dongle plugged in, closed the screen on the laptop so the apple on the back is dark (but not shutting down the laptop) and after about ten seconds the green light started blinking. First I saw a few some sporadic green lights, then, after about 15-20 seconds, the green light started in regular intervals. Then I opened the laptop again and the Macbook recognised the dongle. I've used it regularly since, and it's working 100% of the time. Absolutely no idea why, and no idea if it will work for you. Might be worth a try though.

Very interesting and just tried it. I had a green status light and then a blue light flash for a few seconds with the screen closed. When opended it all went dead and the T-Mobile software when launched said the modem wasn't attached. Also checked the system information and the modem was not connected. I then tried with the Mac connected to the mains. As the modem won't connect into the left USB socket with the power socket plugged in, I swapped to the right USB. Nothing seemed to happen. Then got a USB extender adapter and plugged inot the left USB socket and I'm currently getting a blue light flashing every 3 seconds. The modem is still not recognised by the T-Mobile software or appears in the Mac's system information.

My thought has always been that not enough power is being allocated to the USB3 ports on the new Macbook Airs. My guess is also that the 13" model has more available power than the 11" model. I reckon this is more an issue with the OS rather than the hardware as some people running WIndows on their Mac's have managed to get the modem to work.

I will forward all this to Apple tech support person I've been in touch with but my last 10 e-mails or so have been ignored, probbaly because Apple are too embarrased and don't want to admit any faults.

Thanks to the USB hub, Now Huawei E303C Datacard is working all fine in my new MacBook Pro 13" i7 Mid 2012 model. User uploaded file

For experiment purpose, I purchased one USB 2.0 hub (Unknown Chinese model).User uploaded file

I connected Datacard to USB hub and USB hub to MacBook Pro USB port.

Hurray!! Datacard is detected by MacBook Pro.User uploaded file

So, the problem is with MacBook Pro's new USB ports (USB 2.0 and 3.0 integrated in a single port) and Huawei E303C Datacard.

It is a hardware support issue with Huawei E303C Datacard.

I hope this will solve your problem too.

Just been on the phone to a very helpful T-Mobile UK tech support team (thanks Jamie and Big Mike) and have been told that the current crop of Huawei 3G modems do not officially support USB3 equipped Mac's although some of you have found ways to trick them into working. I'm now upgrading my account and getting a wireless pointer and a very improved contract to go with it.The wireless pointer is actually a good idea as it uses it's own battery so saving some strain on the Mac's battery.

Almost given up waiitng for a reply to my numerous e-mails to Apple but will give one last try just in case they have a fix.

I solved my problem, too! Had the same problems with my mid 2012 macbook air and a Huawei 122 stick. Changed the stick to a Huawei 1221 first, then did some software upgrades, which nevertheless was helpless. Yesterday I bought a USB 2.0 Hub (Belkin) - and: everything's fine!!! 😎

The guys from Apple-shop in Vienna told me, that the MacBook Air starting from mid 2012 now has an non usual USB3.0 (can't explain in detail...)

Thank's for all your ideas!
