when I tried to copy all files

Exactly which files did you copy?

    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Copy the entire /iTunes/ folder frn one external to the other.
    3. Hold Shift, launch iTunes.
    4. Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you want on the external.

there were a bunch of files - such as ituneshelper.exe, intunesadmin.dll, etc - i cant open itunes on the next drive - just the old one however it looks like when i view the properties it is showing that theh target is the new drive - also the itunes icon looks funny  - it doesnt look like the normal icon - it is a square box.

Those are the iTunes program files. They need to be on the boot drive. Don't mess with those.

    Just reinstall iTunes.

Delete all the files you copied to the external.

    To move your iTunes library...

    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Copy the entire /My Music.iTunes/ folder from your internal to the external.
    3. Hold Shift, launch iTunes.
    4. Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external
