forgot system password 10.6.8

I have an older Macbook Pro with 10.6.8 that I don't use very much, and I've forgotton my system password so I am unable to download any updates.

The original OS was Tiger; it now has Leopard on it. When I put in the Leopard start up disc my options are:

  1. Install Mac OS.app;
  2. Optional Installs; or
  3. Instructions

When I click on the Install MAC OS X.app it will restart my computer, which of course I don't want to do cuz I'm afraid it will wipe out all the software I've added since I installed Leopard and I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Can someone help me figure out how to rest the system password?

PS the instructions at the following link do not work..specifically the "resetting the original administrator account password". I put the Snow Leopard disc in, rebootted, held down the Command key and got nothing different. Then I used the Startup Manager, got the disk but now where to select the language or choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
