Sound Icon does not change when pressing the Mute Key

Hey guys,

I have a really annoying problem that only seems to start a few hours after booting my MacBook, it does not happen on a fresh reboot. When I press the mute button on the keyboard it does not mute the sound and the icon in the top bar does not show that the sound has been muted.

If I go to the control panel for the audio and do the same thing with the panel open it works just fine and the icon shows that the audio has been muted. Do any of you have this issue and how can I report this bug to Apple so they can adress it in their next OS upgrade.

Best Regards

Felix

I'm having exactly the same problem. When I press the physical volume buttons, the translucent icon pops up on the screen to say that the volume is changing, but it doesn't actually change the volume in real life, nor does it change the volume in the menu bar. I've just downloaded and installed 10.4.6, which doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.

The only solution I've found has been to change the volume in the menu bar. It also seems to happen more when I'm working on the battery, but I could be completely off-base on that.

I am having the exact same problem. It is even worse because it has happened to me in class before.

The other day, after coming to class I opened up my MBP from sleep intending to work on some things for class. As a general practice I hit the mute key as soon as I open the Mac. This always worked well with my Powerbook. However the system did not mute and the connection noises from iChat played out. This upset the teacher who glared at me for the rest of the class.

This is not an isolated incident either. I have had the tool bar and the translucent icon disagree a number of times.

I have found that if I hit the mute key twice it will generally correct the problem. But it is annoying. I hope someone at Apple is listening (in more than one way it would seem)

I have found that if I hit the mute button too soon after opening the lid (thus pulling it out of sleep) that the translucent mute icon will appear but the sound will not actually mute. This I solve by pressing mute twice more which then always gets it to actually mute. The other solution is waiting a few seconds before pressing the mute button. I can always tell if it worked or not by looking at the sound icon in the menu bar. If there are no sound waves next to the speaker icon then it worked. Definately an annoyence when I want to mute my computer in class as soon as I take it out of sleep.

same problem here too....just noticed it yesterday. no matter how many times i press f3,f4, or f5, it doesnt fix the problem.

so far the only two things that correct the problem are
1)if hit opt + f3, f4 or f5 thus opening the sound control panel.

or

2) plugging the machine back in.

Ive only noticed this bug while running on battery power. but i'll investigate it more now that i am aware of it.

Same problems with anyone else?
